Tattoo Care & Information

Essential information on hygiene, aftercare, and tattoo safety straight from our professional artists.

Hygiene & Safety

Tattoos are awesome, and there’s plenty of reasons why we want to get them. They’re expressive, they’re permanent, and they’re a true form of wearable art. But at the end of the day, getting a tattoo can be considered as a medical procedure in some countries requiring a medical license. A needle is piercing your skin thousands of times, and that means hygiene and safety aren’t just a small consideration — they’re absolutely essential.

So why does tattoo hygiene matter so much? And what should you, as a client, look for before sitting in the chair?

Why Hygiene Is Non-Negotiable in Tattooing

When you get a tattoo, your skin is essentially an open wound until it heals. It requires proper hygiene during the process, and after when caring for the tattoo. Without proper hygiene, that can lead to:

  • Infections that not only mess up the tattoo but also cause serious health issues.
  • Cross-contamination of bloodborne illnesses like Hepatitis or HIV if equipment isn’t sterilized.
  • Longer healing times and faded or damaged tattoos.

A professional studio with strict hygiene protocols drastically reduces these risks, as staff and artists will consider hygiene in every step of the tattoo process.

Aftercare Tattoo Treatment

Proper tattoo aftercare involves gentle washing with antibacterial soap, applying thin layers of fragrance-free moisturizer, keeping it dry and moisturized, avoiding sun, swimming, and tight clothing for a few weeks to prevent infection and aid healing, and always following your specific artist’s instructions for best results.

First Few Days (Bandage Removal & Initial Wash)

Remove Bandage
Keep the artist’s bandage on for a few hours (2–24 hours, check with your artist), then remove it by washing your hands first.

Wash Gently
Use clean hands and a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial soap with lukewarm water to gently wash away plasma and ink.

Pat Dry
Pat it completely dry with a clean paper towel (not a cloth towel).

Apply Ointment
Apply a thin layer of artist-recommended ointment (like Aquaphor or A+D).

Repeat
Wash and moisturize 2–3 times a day for the first week.

Ongoing Care (Weeks 1–2+)

Moisturize
Switch to a fragrance-free lotion (like CeraVe or Lubriderm) after the first few days, keeping the tattoo moist but not soggy.

Avoid Sun
Keep it covered or out of direct sunlight to protect the ink.

No Soaking
Avoid baths, pools, hot tubs, and oceans; quick showers are okay.

Loose Clothing
Wear clean, soft, loose clothing over the tattoo to prevent rubbing.

Don’t Pick
Let scabs flake off naturally; picking can cause scarring and ink loss.

What to Avoid

  • Harsh soaps, scented lotions, petroleum jelly, and alcohol
  • Touching the tattoo with dirty hands
  • Sunbathing, swimming, or submerging the tattoo in water

When to See a Doctor

If you see signs of infection (increased redness, swelling, pus, fever) after the first 48 hours.

Custom Design Proses

While tattoos are more popular than ever, we believe no two tattoos should ever feel the same. Every tattoo tells a story some deeply personal, some purely aesthetic, and others a blend of both.

At West Side Tattoo Bali, we believe your tattoo should be more than just ink. It should feel uniquely yours. That’s why we focus on creating fully custom designs through a thoughtful, collaborative process. Our goal is to transform your ideas into a powerful visual piece that reflects your story and showcases the strengths of our artists.

Below is a breakdown of our tattoo process, so you know exactly what to expect when you book a session with us.

The Beginning of the Tattoo Process

We generally recommend an in-person consultation, as it allows for clearer communication and better design direction. However, online consultations are also available if you’re unable to visit the studio beforehand.

You don’t need to come in with a fully developed concept although that can be helpful. Reference photos, sketches, inspiration images, or even a rough idea are more than enough for our artists to begin shaping your design.

Whether you’re planning a full black-and-grey darkside sleeve or a small floral piece on your wrist, our artists will have a strong foundation to start creating a design tailored to you.

During the Consultation, We’ll Discuss:

Concept

The overall aesthetic, style, and mood you’re aiming for, including any symbolism or personal meaning behind the tattoo.

References & Ideas

If you bring reference images or inspiration, our artists will review them and determine what works best adapting elements to create a cohesive and original tattoo design.

Size & Placement

We’ll measure and mock up the design to fit your body perfectly. For larger pieces, we may take photos of the body area so the artist can design directly onto a mock-up, ensuring the tattoo flows naturally with your anatomy.

Every step of this process is designed to make sure your tattoo feels intentional, personal, and visually striking from concept to final execution.
